Project Statement

For this project, I collected materials from nature to follow step by step the experience of nature dyeing. I tried three methods of the natural dying process, one is tie dye by using red cabbages, another is immersion dye with onion skin and carrots. I also attempted dying with fresh flowers. I enjoyed the process of dyeing and the result came out differently.

Materials

Fresh Flowers
Red Cabbages
Onion Skin
Red Corrots
Soda Ash
Vineger
Thermometer
100% Cotton Fiber
Measuring Spoon

Preparing Dye

Tie dye: red cabbages
Immersion dye: onion, red carrots

Preparing Fibers

Using rubber bands to tie up the fiber to create different patterns. I used another method of spreading different flowers on the fiber and used rubber bands to tie up.

Final Result

Flower Dye

Tie Dye

Immerse Dye

Impression

Through the experiment and study of nature dye. I got a basic knowledge of how the process worked. It took a lot of time to prepare dye materials. In my perception, natural dyes are usually not very pigmented, so I was shocked at the ability of some vegetables to dye. When I was cutting the red carrots there was more juice than I expected. And the ability to dye is very strong. My cutting board was stained by the carrot juice and it cannot be washed off. This experiment was very fun and interesting. I attempted and explored many different natural materials and processes. I think it’s particularly meaningful.
