Project Statement
For light and luminare projects, I’m trying to explore the technique of bamboo weaving. By sculpturing the form and pattern of bamboo to experience the lighting and shadow at home. The lamp is a floor lamp which can displace at home and create a natural and homely vibe for the people.
Project Strategy
To begin with the project, I first decided my three directions for my luminare. I had made paper models for my three ideas. By doing sketches, material testing and light exploration. I narrow down my direction to one which is bamboo. Rather than come up with ideas and sketches, I choose to explore the material first. I brought different types and sizes of bamboo. There are wide, narrow and different thickness bamboo strips.
Later, I began my research on bamboo weaving. I found out Youtube has many tutorials by following the instructions that I had made for small samples with bamboo strips. I found out that I was interested in using wire and bamboo stripes to sculpt the form. Through the processes of making, I was inspired by my small samples, so therefore, I tried to make my ideas out in small sizes. By the time I had settled on my final idea, I built out my lamp with table lamp size and tested it with different light sources such as omnidirectional, natural, and directional.
Concept Development
At first I came out with three directions that we are interested in, then I started to make models and conduct light testing. Later, I share my ideas and thoughts with my classmates. In the discussion, most of my classmates suggested that bamboo weaving might be a direction for me to get into it and so do I. At the beginning, I had no idea what kind of lamp i’m going to make. I then started randoming trying to learn different bamboo weaving techniques from the internet.
After many attempts, I found out that I was interested in using wire and bamboo stripes to sculpt the form. Also, I have decided what kind of lamp I’m going for. Therefore, I tried to make my ideas out in small sizes. By the time I had settled on my final idea, I built out my lamp with table lamp size and tested it with different light sources such as omnidirectional, natural, and directional light.
